Skills Workshops

Tutor Corps Skills WorkshopsReinforce or preview fundamental principles in our one-week math, writing or study skills workshops. These workshops are perfect for those who learn best in a small classroom setting. Our Skills Workshops are designed to provide enrichment for students entering 7th and 8th grade, and review for those entering 9th grade.

Study Skills – Solid study skills support academic performance in all classes. Many students spend hours studying but remember very little because they are not studying effectively. In this Workshop, students will develop skills in the following areas:
  • organization
  • time management
  • note taking
  • reading comprehension
  • test-taking strategies
  • listening skills
  • memorization techniques

This Workshop also covers organization of binders and backpacks, and provides tips for how students can work with their teachers to help ensure success. After taking this course, students will enter school in the fall with a variety of skills to perform well in each class from day one!

Writing Intensive – Students will take part in all aspects of the writing process, including:
  • Composing expository and argumentative essays in response to a variety of poems, short fiction and essays;
  • Writing two papers with the goals of producing strong, clear thesis statements and topic sentences, and incorporating and analyzing textual evidence to support a thesis; and,
  • Examining models of proficient writing.

By the end of the Workshop, students will have created a portfolio of their own work in addition to models and strategies for reference in future English classes.

Math – Algebra is one of the most critical courses for high school success in mathematics. Students will review key algebraic concepts including:
  • linear and quadratic equations
  • equations involving radicals
  • exponents
  • absolute value
  • inequalities with one and two variables

By the end of the Workshop, students will have sharpened their math skills and developed a solid base to support upcoming concepts in the fall.

quote left Tutor Corps’ Study Skills Workshop exceeded my expectations. After the one-week class, my sons came away with valuable organization, time management and study skills that they will be able to use throughout the school year. Importantly, they obtained insight into their individual learning styles. The small class size and attentive instructor created the ideal summer learning environment.quote right
