Our Story

Meet the Founders

Tutor Corps is a family-run educational services company, founded by brothers Jesse and Noel Rosencranz-Engelmann. Jesse and Noel have always shared a passion for learning. After graduating from Stanford University, they sought opportunities that would allow them to instill the same passion in others. In 2002, they created Tutor Corps, a company that would provide personalized, in-home tutoring for students who need academic support and want to excel. Their mission was to help students understand not only what to learn, but how to learn.

Based on their beliefs, Jesse and Noel established four guiding principles that form the foundation of Tutor Corps’ culture.

• Quality tutors provide quality tutoring. We hire creative and supportive tutors who have a proven passion for education. Our high-caliber tutors have two or more years of tutoring or teaching experience, and are experts in their subjects. They are graduates of leading universities, and many hold advanced degrees and teaching credentials. Our tutors are sensitive to anxiety and self-esteem issues, and have experience teaching students with learning challenges.
• Partnership and personalized learning deliver results. Tutor Corps has been tutoring in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2002. Our relationships with students and families are built on mutual trust, respect, and commitment. This is the foundation of our business. By taking time to understand what makes each student unique, the learning process becomes more personalized, and therefore more effective.
• A holistic approach leads to long-term success. Our integrated approach combines customized content, organizational study skills development, and mentorship. By addressing each student’s learning strengths and areas of improvement, and teaching not only what to learn but how to learn, we empower students to become successful life-long learners.
• A passion for learning is contagious. We strive to inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities. To advance this goal, we have established Tutor Corps Foundation. The Foundation awards scholarships to students with innovative ideas addressing the needs of under-served students in the community.
